Bringing a baby into the world is a fabulous event that should be documented in beautiful images.  This is a time that you are going to want to remember even if you don’t feel like it right now.  I know that with my pregnancy I didn’t really want any pictures taken. So I have a total of two pictures of me pregnant.  They aren’t that great but I guess they are something.  Don’t let that happen to you.

If you are thinking about booking a maternity session or have one already on the calendar then the tips below should help you prepare for a great session.

  1.  When should you schedule your session?  I tell my clients the best time to schedule your session is between 31 and 36 weeks.  However,  we all know that there comes a time in our pregnancy where you sort of cross over into an area where you start to feel bloated and don’t feel like you look your best.  As soon as you start to feel that happening, book that session.
  2. Because maternity portraits usually show a little more skin than normal, make sure you moisturize your skin an hour or so before your scheduled time.
  3. Make sure that you aren’t wearing any clothes that are tight or might cause red marks on your skin
  4. Treat yourself to a manicure and pedicure before your session.  Nails do show and fixing a chipped manicure in post processing is difficult and expensive.
  5. If you have any special baby items, be sure to let your photographer know you want to include them in your session so they can plan accordingly
  6. Choosing an outfit is always the hardest part of preparing for a portrait session.  Maternity sessions are no different.  Speak with your photographer so see if they have any maternity gowns in stock or if they can recommend a vendor where you can find some that you love.  Clothing will make all the different in how you feel about your images.
  7. Lastly, book a blow out with your hairdresser and visit a make up artist to do your make up, even if you normally have a pretty natural style.  You should feel gorgeous for your session and having your hair and make up done can make all the difference.

If you follow the tips above you will be well on your way to a gorgeous maternity session!

Remember all clients who book a newborn session also receive a mini-maternity session as a part of their package.
